Do I Really Need a New Panel? Or Just a Cleanup?

You open the electrical panel and see a mess — unlabeled breakers, open knockouts, double taps. It looks bad… but does that mean it is bad? Maybe not. Sometimes what looks like a major issue just needs a cleanup — not a full replacement. Here's how to tell the difference.
“Not every ugly panel is unsafe — and not every unsafe panel looks ugly. Sometimes you just need a cleanup, not a full replacement.”
Do I Really Need a New Panel? Or Just a Cleanup?

What “Panel Cleanup” Actually Means

A cleanup isn’t cosmetic — it’s functional.
Over time, as electricians (or DIYers) make changes to your system, panels can get messy, mislabeled, or unsafe. A cleanup brings things back to:
  • Proper labeling (so you know which breaker controls what)
  • Tightened connections to prevent arcing or heat
  • Correct wire routing and clamping
  • Safe spacing (no overcrowding, no open holes)
  • Removal of double-tapped breakers if needed
  • Clear, code-compliant installation ready for inspection
Pro Tip: A cleanup can often extend the life of your existing panel — and it costs far less than a full upgrade.

When a Cleanup Might Be All You Need

You may not need a full panel replacement if:
  • The panel is a reputable brand in good condition
  • You have space for additional breakers
  • You’re not overloading any one circuit
  • There are no signs of overheating, rust, or arcing
  • The main service is appropriately sized (100A or 200A)
We’ve saved many homeowners from full panel replacements by performing a detailed cleanup and making safe, code-correct adjustments.

When a Full Replacement Is the Better Move

That said, some panels are beyond a tune-up. A replacement may be necessary if:
  • Your panel is from a known unsafe brand (Zinsco, FPE, Challenger)
  • It’s too full to safely add any new circuits
  • There are signs of corrosion, heat damage, or brittle wiring
  • Your home’s electrical needs have outgrown the panel’s capacity
  • You're adding high-demand systems (EV charger, hot tub, HVAC)
We’ll always walk you through the “why” — and only recommend replacement if it truly improves safety or function.

Why Panel Condition Matters More Than Panel Age

It’s not just about the year it was installed — it’s about how it’s held up.
Some 40-year-old panels are still working beautifully. Others installed just 10 years ago are already showing signs of wear.
What we look for:
  • Breaker condition and tightness
  • Labeling accuracy and logic
  • Wire integrity and routing
  • Signs of homeowner or handyman rewiring
  • Room for safe expansion or upgrades

Why In-Person Assessments Matter

Panel work can’t be judged by photos or guesses alone. An in-person assessment lets us:
  • Open the panel and inspect it fully
  • Check your home’s usage and future plans
  • Identify safe, smart improvements
  • Offer a clear path forward — cleanup, upgrade, or monitor
Pro Tip: If an electrician says you need a new panel but can’t explain why — get a second opinion.
