Adding Lighting Where There Isn’t Any — What to Expect

7/3/2025

You’ve got a dark hallway. A shadowy corner. A bedroom or basement that somehow has no overhead light at all. If you’re wondering what it takes to fix that — and whether it’s a huge deal — here’s what you need to know.
“Adding a new light fixture doesn’t have to mean ripping your walls open — especially when you work with someone who knows the space.”
Adding Lighting Where There Isn't Any - What to Expect

Why There’s No Light There in the First Place

Surprisingly, it’s normal — especially in older homes.
In many pre-1990s homes (and even some newer builds), rooms were designed with switched outlets instead of ceiling lights. Builders assumed you’d use lamps.
Why it happens:
  • Older code didn’t require ceiling lighting in bedrooms
  • Basements and attics were often unfinished
  • Hallways and stairwells were under-lit by design
  • Some spaces were “finished later” without proper electrical planning
Pro Tip: We run into this in White Bear Lake and Roseville homes all the time — especially in basements and older bedrooms.

What the Process Usually Involves

Adding a light where none exists isn’t as invasive as most people fear.
Here’s what a typical install looks like:
  1. Mapping a safe wiring route from an existing power source
  2. Fishing wire through walls or ceilings (minimal drywall cuts, if any)
  3. Installing a wall switch in a code-compliant location
  4. Mounting the light fixture and securing connections
  5. Testing, cleanup, and walkthrough
Most projects take a few hours, and we leave your space even cleaner than we found it.
Pro Tip: The right lighting layout can transform how a room feels — not just how it looks.

Things to Think About Before You Call

To help us help you faster, here’s what to consider:
  • Do you want one fixture or multiple (like recessed lights)?
  • Is there an attic or crawlspace above or below the room?
  • Do you want a dimmer switch or smart controls?
  • Is this part of a bigger room remodel?
  • Have you already bought a fixture — or would you like help choosing one?
Even if you’re not sure, we’ll walk you through it.

A Note for Homes in the Northeast Suburbs

We add lighting to older homes in the Northeast Suburbs every single week.
From Roseville to North St. Paul, homeowners are upgrading:
  • Dark living rooms with no overheads
  • Kids’ bedrooms with only lamp outlets
  • Hallways and stairwells that feel unsafe at night
  • Basements being turned into offices or family rooms
We’re trained to do it efficiently and cleanly — with minimal disruption and clear, friendly explanations throughout.

When You Don’t Trust Your Electrical, Trust Skyline Electric

We’re in the neighborhood every day, helping homeowners brighten their spaces safely — and finally get the lighting they’ve been wanting for years.
