How to Know If Your Panel Is Ready for Today’s Power Demands

From EV chargers to air fryers to finished basements full of smart devices — homes today use more power than ever. But is your electrical panel actually built to keep up? Here’s how to tell if your system is ready, or quietly falling behind.
“Today’s homes demand more from your panel — but your panel might still be stuck in the ’80s.”
How to Know If Your Panel Is Ready for Today’s Power Demands

Why Panel Capacity Matters More Than Ever

Even if your lights aren’t flickering, your panel could be overloaded.
Modern homes are full of high-draw devices that older systems simply weren’t built to handle:
  • Electric vehicles and chargers
  • Tankless water heaters
  • Hot tubs, saunas, and heated floors
  • Kitchen remodels with added circuits
  • Home offices
  • High-efficiency HVAC systems
Many homes across the Northeast Suburbs were built with 100-amp service — and back then, that was plenty. Today, we often see those same panels struggling quietly under modern loads.

Signs Your Panel Might Be Maxed Out

Here are some common red flags:
  • You don’t have space for any more breakers
  • Breakers trip often or feel hot to the touch
  • You use extension cords or power strips in multiple rooms
  • You’ve added major loads (EV, hot tub, workshop)
  • Lights dim when large appliances kick on
  • Your panel is from a recalled brand (like Zinsco, Challenger or Federal Pacific)
Pro Tip: If your home was built before the early 1990s and hasn’t had a panel upgrade, there’s a good chance it’s due — or at least worth evaluating.

What We Look For During an Assessment

When we assess a panel, we check for:
  • Amperage of the main service (100A vs. 200A)
  • Breaker condition and labeling
  • Signs of heat, rust, arcing, or corrosion
  • Whether circuits are properly balanced across the panel
  • If there’s room to add more capacity (via subpanel or upgrade)
We also ask about your current and future plans:
Are you finishing a basement? Adding an EV? Planning a kitchen remodel? These can all push your system beyond its limits.

What If It’s Not Ready?

Don’t worry — it doesn’t always mean a full replacement.
Depending on what we find, the right solution could be:
  • Replacing a single overloaded breaker
  • Adding a subpanel to offload some circuits
  • Rebalancing existing loads
  • Or, when needed, upgrading to a new 200A panel built for modern demands
The only way to know is with a professional assessment based on your actual usage, wiring, and plans.

Why In-Person Assessments Matter

Every home — and every panel — is different.
Even two homes on the same street can have wildly different electrical needs based on:
  • Remodels or additions
  • EV charging setups
  • Appliance upgrades
  • Age and condition of wiring
  • Panel brand, layout, and workmanship
That’s why we never quote panel work without seeing the setup in person. It’s the only way to give you real answers, not guesses.
